Use Gemini CLI to work with code and files from a terminal through a supported API key or enterprise account. Google moved individual free and Pro/Ultra account access to Antigravity CLI in June 2026; check the authentication route before installing.
Gemini CLI is Google's Apache-2.0 open-source terminal agent for exploring code, generating edits and using Gemini services. It remains an active repository, but its audience changed materially in June 2026. Google's announcement says individual free, Google AI Pro and Ultra accounts stopped receiving Gemini CLI requests and moved to Antigravity CLI. Enterprise users with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses and supported API-key access remain. An individual developer should therefore avoid relying on older README or quota tables that still describe personal sign-in as available.
For an eligible project, install from the official package, authenticate using the supported enterprise or paid API route and run `gemini` in a small repository. Ask for an explanation before allowing edits. The getting-started guide describes code exploration, test generation and `/stats model` for usage. As with any terminal agent, inspect requested shell commands, generated files and the resulting tests. A quota number alone does not prove that a particular account is eligible to authenticate.
The open-source package has no software license fee, but the actual model service depends on credentials. Gemini API and Vertex AI paid routes are priced by their own model and token schedules; Code Assist enterprise access follows its license. Google's privacy page also distinguishes terms by authentication method. Choose the route first, then verify its current quota, data terms and billing in the account console. For a personal subscription, follow the official Antigravity CLI migration announcement instead of treating Gemini CLI as a working free tier.

The CLI source is open under Apache 2.0. Google announced that individual free and AI Pro/Ultra account requests no longer run through Gemini CLI after June 18, 2026. Supported enterprise Code Assist licenses and paid Gemini or Vertex API credentials remain the relevant access routes. Do not infer present access from quota documentation that still lists older personal tiers.
A Gemini or Vertex API key can incur model- and token-based fees; enterprise Code Assist is licensed separately. Authentication method also changes applicable terms and privacy notices. Check live project billing and `/stats model` before unattended tasks.

Google announced an individual-account transition to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026. The Gemini CLI repository remains maintained for enterprise and supported API usage; this is an access change, not a repository deletion.
Google says terms and privacy notices differ for Code Assist, Gemini Developer API and Vertex AI authentication. Review the exact route and avoid sending secrets in prompts or shell output.
