Official billing and fee FAQ ↗
Call multiple AI models through one API and choose provider, fallback and privacy routing rules. OpenRouter passes through model prices, charges fees when purchasing credits, and applies a plan-dependent allowance then a 5% BYOK fee.
OpenRouter is an API gateway for accessing different model providers from one integration. A developer can select a specific model, set provider preferences and configure fallbacks instead of maintaining a separate client for each vendor. Its value is operational: testing models against the same application contract, controlling availability and comparing latency and cost. It is not itself the model that writes the answer, so output quality, limits and data handling still depend on the chosen upstream route.
A good pilot uses one small prompt set with expected outputs and a spending ceiling. Create a limited API key, choose an explicit model, log returned usage and compare the same prompts on a second model. Only then configure fallback: a fallback protects availability but may alter output shape, safety behavior or price. Provider routing and privacy settings should be tested with a trace of the selected provider rather than inferred from a model name. Keep model IDs, token counts and errors in the application's own monitoring.
OpenRouter says model inference prices are passed through without markup; the platform charges a small fee on credit purchases. Its support page says BYOK has a plan-dependent free allowance measured by equivalent list-price usage, then a 5% fee. Individual model rates vary and can change. A team should record the effective total cost, including credit acquisition, BYOK charges and any fallback route, rather than publishing one universal price per request.

There is no single price for every request. OpenRouter says it passes through providers' model-inference rates without markup and charges a fee on purchased credits. The model catalog lists live input, output and sometimes other modality prices. Check the exact selected model and provider before quoting an application budget.
BYOK carries a plan-dependent free allowance measured in list-price usage; subsequent BYOK use has a 5% fee based on the equivalent OpenRouter cost. Provider charges may also apply on the provider account. Fallback and retries can change total spending.
No. It routes requests to selected models and providers.
No. Rates vary by model, provider and usage type.
Its support page says provider model prices pass through without markup; credit purchases have a fee.
Yes, with a plan-dependent free allowance and then a 5% service fee.
It tries another allowed route on failure; verify output and price changes.

Fallback improves availability but can change model output and expense. Test a real provider failure and inspect the selected route, response contract and usage trace.
Requests are routed through OpenRouter to a selected provider. Examine routing/privacy settings, provider logging terms and application data minimization before sending confidential prompts.
