Claude is changing the names of its individual Max tiers and beginning to remove the five-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts. Max 5x is now called Max, and Max 20x is now called Ultra. Claude says the monthly prices remain $100 and $200, respectively, and existing subscribers do not need to take action.

The tier names are changing; subscribers do not need to switch manually
In an announcement from Claude’s official X account, the former Max 5x tier becomes Max, while Max 20x becomes Ultra. The post says the prices remain $100 per month for Max and $200 per month for Ultra. These are the prices stated in the announcement; regional pricing, taxes, and subscription channels can affect the amount shown at checkout.
Claude says existing subscribers do not need to migrate or select a new plan themselves. The announcement describes a name change, not a required re-subscription.
Verified Ultra accounts are getting a different session limit
Claude is also starting to remove the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, beginning with most existing subscribers. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until verification is complete. Claude says the temporary restriction helps prevent fraud and abuse, and that subscribers will receive an email when it is removed.
Claude’s Help Center says Ultra accounts are verified automatically using factors such as account and payment history. The five-hour limit is removed automatically after verification. In Settings → Usage, a verified Ultra account will no longer show a “Current session” bar. Verifying a phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove this limit. See Claude’s Ultra plan guidance.
No five-hour cap does not mean unlimited usage
The announcement says weekly limits remain unchanged. Claude’s Help Center describes Ultra as including 10 times the Pro plan’s usage each week. Ultra still has a weekly limit across models and a separate weekly limit for Fable; Claude also reserves the ability to apply additional limits for capacity and fair access. Read Claude’s usage-limit guidance.
For Claude Code subscribers, usage across Claude on the web, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop counts toward shared plan limits. Removing a five-hour window changes when verified Ultra subscribers can work; it does not remove weekly allowances or create a separate allowance for each product surface.
What subscribers can check now
- Check the plan name in your account or billing settings.
- For Ultra, open Settings → Usage and look for the “Current session” bar.
- If a newer account still has a temporary limit, wait for Claude’s automatic verification and watch for the email notification. Claude says no extra action is needed once the account is verified.
- Plan Claude and Claude Code work around the weekly allowance; “no five-hour limit” is not an unlimited-use promise.
The change is most relevant to verified Ultra subscribers who use Claude Code for long, uninterrupted work sessions. They can work without the five-hour session limit while remaining subject to weekly allowances. For Max subscribers, the announcement confirms a new name and unchanged price; it does not announce the removal of Max’s five-hour limit.
Original announcement
“We’re renaming our Max plans: Max 5x → Max; Max 20x → Ultra. Max is still $100/month, and Ultra is still $200.”
