Google introduced Nano Banana 2.1 in a post showing October 7, 2026, at 0:00. It highlights three areas: visual design, mask-based editing and subject consistency.

Google says the new image generation and editing model improves on its predecessors, particularly in those areas. Its follow-up says the rollout is starting across Gemini, AI Mode in Search, Google AI Studio, Flow, Stitch, Google Ads and Gemini Enterprise Platform.
What interests me most is a simple request: change this part and leave the rest alone. When making images for a website, an unwanted change to the subject or composition can turn a small edit into another round of work.
That makes controlled edits and subject consistency more interesting to me than a polished sample. I would judge this update by whether the subject still holds together after several rounds of changes.
